A Word from Véronique Cayla, Director of the CNC

The first two editions of the festival What Can Cinema Do? took place in 2003 and 2005 at the cinema Les 3 Luxembourg and focused on the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

This year, its programming shall include other countries from Middle East and welcome directors from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine and Israel. Their movies take regional conflicts as a background of daily life in those territories.

Based on screenings and debates with film directors, this festival provides an opportunity to discover unrecognized works and stimulate numerous meetings and fruitful exchanges.

The CNC (Centre National de la Cinématographie) is particularly dedicated to promoting and expressing cultural identities such as the diversity of creation, and aims at encouraging circulation of films around the world. This event therefore fully fits into CNC's support, notably through Fonds Sud, which is specifically intended for fragile movies from southern countries.

For these reasons, I truly hope that this new edition of the festival will enjoy the same success as the former ones.

Véronique Cayla
Director of the CNC
